Pictures of Yakumo Page01

Yakumo-cho has the Urap River that is in the northern island "Hokkaido," running through to the Pacific Ocean. The river is interesting because it has both northern fish and southern fish. The river is the northern limit of ayu fish (plecoglossus) which live in the south. It is also the southern limit of shishamo smelt and rainbow smelt (osmerus) which live in the north.
In spring, rainbow smelt and carp move up stream in the river to lay eggs. In fall, the river is teeming with salmon returing to spawn. At the end of fall, a lot of shishamo smelt move up river to lay eggs.
